Brewing filter coffee at home is a beautiful ritual—simple, satisfying, and full of aroma. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to perfect your technique, this guide will walk you through exactly how to brew a rich, balanced cup using either a coffee maker or basic kitchen tools.
At Everything But Coffee (EBC), we believe great coffee starts with great ingredients—and the right tools. Let’s help you unlock your inner home barista.
Why Filter Coffee?
Filter coffee is light, nuanced, and allows you to experience the full flavor profile of your beans. It’s also a gentler method of brewing that’s ideal for daily coffee drinkers who enjoy clean, smooth cups.
What You’ll Need:
- Freshly ground coffee (filter grind)
- Hot water (just off the boil – about 90–96°C)
- A filter coffee maker (manual or electric) or a funnel + jug method
- EBC Filter Papers (1×2, 1×4, or Basket size depending on your setup)

Step-by-Step: Brew With a Filter Coffee Machine

- Insert your filter paper into your coffee machine basket.
- Add 1–2 tablespoons (about 10–15g) of freshly ground coffee for every 180ml of water.
- Fill the water reservoir with fresh, filtered water.
- Press start and let the machine do the work.
- Enjoy your hot, smooth cup of coffee.
No Coffee Maker? Try the Manual Funnel Method
If you don’t own a coffee machine, don’t worry. Here’s a simple method using a funnel or pour-over cone.

Instructions:
- Place your filter paper into the funnel or pour-over cone over your mug or jug.
- Rinse the paper with hot water to remove paper taste and warm your mug.
- Add your ground coffee—same ratio: 10–15g per 180ml.
- Pour hot water slowly in circles, allowing the grounds to bloom and extract.
- Wait 2–3 minutes for the water to filter through.
- Serve and enjoy immediately.
